Interview:10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
My father was born in Svilajinac, as a child of a postwar “rebuilding the country†project. My granny was born on the island of Hvar, and my grandfather was her second husband, she married him after the communists had killed her first one. My grandfather was from Slovenia. His father was Jewish, he came from Germany, and his father had come from France. I believe he was the descendant of Jesus… My grandfather’s mother was from the Uskok people. She lived in a forest away from people and her hair was down to her feet long. My mother was born in Tekeris. When she was a baby, she was bitten by a werewolf… Her father was killed and her mother was often strangled by the witches. I am Boris Sribar, born in 1979, in Sabac, Serbia. I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Sculpture Dept. in Belgrade.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I made my first video in 2004. It was the video ‘Cycle’ and it was the most suitable format for the idea I wanted to express.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
They are always with the provoking topics, most often with regard to religion and other social issues that I occupy me personally.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
I don’t have any principles, everything depends on the idea I’m working on.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
As I don’t have a camera of my own, it was always either borrowed from a friend or rented.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general
and you personally?
I think of new media in the same way as I think of any other media: the concept defines the most appropriate one. That’s how I work.
7. How do you finance your films?
Since I live in Serbia, budgets are almost non-existent. The only possible donator is the Ministry of Culture. That means most often I finance everything myself. Sometimes I participate in exhibitions that have the production budget.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
Most often I did videos on my own, but I also have the experience of working in a team.
8b. If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I prefer to work on my own, because my videos are completely developed from my own concepts, hence I know exactly what I want them to look like. I was lucky to cooperate with people who were excellent in their jobs and we could complement each other; unfortunately this does not happen often.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
I could not name a specific person, it is the composition of my life, education, art, etc. However, there are many video artists I appreciate very much.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I intend to continue with my art and get a 1.000.000 $ budget.
