Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I was born in Oslo in Norway. I now live and work in Trondheim. I started out as many other artists to draw in my childhood. It was, and it still is, the urge to express myself that made me decide I wanted to be a professional artist.
I attended Nordland Art- and Film School from 2005-07 which is the only state run preschool of fine art in Norway. From there I now study for my Bachelor’s Degree at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
My artistic activity is interdisciplinary and conceptual and video is for me only one of many choices of mediums but I do like the control of the image creation.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
In my art I explore social critical subjects like ambivalent social behaviors. In my latest project I look into the relationship between the Norwegian society and immigrants.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
I work within a context of contemporary art.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I have used both DVCAM and HD cameras in my video productions. A principle I have is to always use the technology that fits my project rather than to settle with a less suitable option.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?
Regarding film versus video I find the positive qualities in video like it being cheap and fast to work with worth more than films accustomed aesthetics.
7. How do you finance your films?
As a visual artist and a student even I do not have many options for financing my works. Luckily there are some good project funds in Norway I can apply.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
Collaboration can be fertile, but because it also means a lot of negotiations I usually work independently with my projects. In my last video project I use paid professionals for tasks I can not do myself.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
Even though my projects take a point of departure in social subjects, they are driven by a research in my own ethics which is something I always comes back to.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I want to be able to live of my artistic work.
