Interview:10 questions

1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background

I was born in Taitung City, Taiwan, 1980. Not a very good student I guess. Graduated from SHIH HSIN University, Graduate Institute for Radio, Television and Film (Taipei, Taiwan) in 2008.

2. When, how and why started you filming?

My first short film was completed in 2001. I did this film for the movie club in university. It was shot and edited by Hi-8.

3. What kind of subjects have your films?

My father, death, family, diaries, past, voyage.

4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?

If its super 8 films, I develop them by myself in my bathroom. And no, I don’t follow any principles. That’s because my films cartridges are mostly expired.

5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.

I have 1 Kiev 16mm film camera, which was brought from eBay years ago; I also have 3 super 8 film cameras, 2 of them were brought in Hong Kong. Recently I use mobile phone camera and a small digital camera ‘VistaQuest’ for filming.

6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?

I am still quite confused and trying to define what is ‘new media’.

7. How do you finance your films?

It doesn’t cost much the way I make films, it’s usually low budget, sometimes no budget film. So, basically by myself.

8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?

I work alone.

9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?

Jonas Mekas, Barbara Hammer, Naomi Kawase, Liu Yung Hao, Yann Beauvais, Tony Wu Chun-Hui, Kao Chung Li.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?

I hope I can still make films when I am 80.
