Interview:10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
My educational background is varied and very rich. Originally, I graduated with a degree in English from both a Polish and a British university. I spent some time teaching English until I felt I needed to ground my interest in art, therefore three years ago I started an art course in Audio-visual communication in Lodz, Poland.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
It came from within, I felt a need to start experimenting with a moving image which fascinated me. The sole question of an illusion of movement has kept me going for a long time now.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
Various, anything from discussing human mind, behaviours to dreams and social issues.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
At the moment, I am interested in experimenting with various media, so I guess I may say the principle is to use mixed media and mixed styles. I am testing the ground to see how far I can go with a moving image.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I use anything that can record an image, so cameras (both digital and analogue), camcorders, scanners and scanned images, as well as drawing directly on a material.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?
Well, it definitely liberated people and new media led the film out of a studio. I would hope to see new media as a tool which would allow us exposition to multiple experiences. The diversity is yet another issue that I hope new media will nurture.
7. How do you finance your films?
My films exist on non-existing budget. Basically, the only investment there is is my time, dedication and sacrifice. The projects are done between other jobs with whatever money I happen to have.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
My projects are so small that it would pretty difficult to work on them in a team. To be honest, I would not mind working in a team, just think of the wealth of experience a group has got. And how much people share – personal stories, experiences, insights! Yes, I am sure working in a team would be fun. Working on your own, lets you be more reflective, and, also you can adjust the pace of work to your needs.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
Many people, but my favourite are Stefan and Franciszka Themerson, for their incessant experimentation.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
Little plans: find time, resources for my next project on language
Big plans: carry on studying and experimenting
