Interview: 10 questions

1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
Since I was very little I’ve always been very passionate about two things: music and
drawings.
Eventually I went for the second one choosing an art high school where I learned a
lot about painting and history of art. From there I left my hometown to study industrial
design in Florence which I only later realised that wasn’t my path. Once in London I
started working as an illustrator experimenting with moving images and it was then
that I decided to start an MA in Character Animation at Central Saint Martin.

2. When, how and why started you filming?
I started making films while I was at university because I had to, however it is
something that came out as a natural evolution of the learning process.

3. What kinds of topics have your films?
Although I like narrative storyline I’m very interested to experiment with abstract
times and non linear stories.

4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
Usually I start collecting ideas in my mind that eventually ends up on paper as
drawings or written lines. From there I make a selection trying to develop a sort of
script or storyboard.

5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I liked very much to do traditional animation on paper, but since it takes a long time I
gradually switched to digital brushes using Adobe programmes like Flash Photoshop
etc..

6. These days digital technology is dominating also video as a medium. In which way
the digital aspect is entering the creation of your videos, technologically and/or
conceptually?

I believe that technology is a tool that help me to express whatever I want say, of
course it influences my style, working system or mindset. However it remain just a
tool that can sometimes inspires you or overcome analogical limitation.

7. How do you finance your films?

So far my films where produced by university, but in general I use personal funding.

8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?

At the first stages of a project I tend to work alone as it easier to take decision and
choose the style, but I also love to work in team during the production process. I
think it’s very important to receive external feedback from different point of views.

9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
I’m very attracted by Asian film-makers and directors such as Makoto Shinkai or
Satoshi Kon for their amazing way of storytelling. Also great source of inspirations is
the italian artist Gianluigi Toccafondo, master of great technique.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I’d like to tell more personal stories and experimenting with different animation
techniques as well as live action.
