Interview: 10 Questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I studied history and psychology in Germany. I worked as a schoolteacher for many years and had photo exhibitions. When I joined my husband in Australia I deepened my knowledge of art and built up a new interest in computer-generated art and video.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I discovered that I like to create digital images and joined the Fresh Media Group at Frankston Arts Centre (Melbourne) in 2006. This was co-ordinated by the Visual Arts Officer Amanda Slack-Smith. She animated us in 2007 to make videos. I was immediately captivated. To acquire more technical knowledge I did a course to learn Final Cut Pro.
3.What kind of subjects have your films?
I am interested in psychological and philosophical themes, which lead in their turn to social and ecological ones. On the other hand I am fascinated by myths, which approach truth in an indirect way.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
Because I am interested in myths and dreams I create videos more out of my own world. I combine intuition with research and concept. All three elements are combined in a metaphorical, poetic way by means of clip layering and filters.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
Sony Handycam HDR HC9E, then Final Cut Pro. The advantage is that as an older woman with a small video camera, I am mostly not recognised when I am filming.
6. What are the chances of the digital video technologies for creating art using “moving images†generally, and for you personally?
It pleases me that the new video technologies give easier access to the development of my ideas.
7. How do you finance your films?
I like to think that it must be possible to create video art without great expense.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I work individually.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
(i) Nam June Paik
(ii) Robert Rauschenberg
(iii) Bill Viola
(iv) Pipilotti Rist
(v) Daniel Crooks
(vi) Alyssa Simone
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I would like to share my work with a larger arts community.
