Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I am an identical twin and I grew up in Oxford. I studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, and then my Masters at the Slade. Although my main discipline is media, my work is very sculptural.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I started making animation to prove that I had enough concentration to see it through. I consider this to be an antithesis to my large scale installations, which I constructed very rapidly.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
I am interested in the warping effect of human memory, uncomfortable spaces and psychological hiding places.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
Ideas for animations usually occur very spontaneously for me. Once I work out the story board, the animation seldom changes from my initial idea.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I scan my drawings into the computer and work with Photoshop and Premier to make my animation.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general
and you personally?
New media fills me with dread and fascination.
7. How do you finance your films?
I have a day job.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I mainly work as an individual, but enjoy collaborating with other artists. Collaboration 1, an interactive sound installation made with Lu Clarke is the first in a series of future works. Being a twin, I enjoy the different and fresh perspectives that another artist can bring to an idea.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
I am influenced by the morbid humor of Paul McCarthy’s performances, Gregor Schneider’s installations, and Janet Cardiff’s sound works. I also draw inspiration from the films of David Lynch, Bela Tarr and Andrei Tarkovsky.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I am currently working on an animated music video for indie label Mordant Music’s new release 24 Million Or Sell Neverland. In the near future I will be an artist in residence in Western Sydney, where I hope to develop my sculptural and mixed media installations.
