Interview: 10 Questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I was born and raised in Germany. Since I was a small child I was fascinated by the arts. I was early in my life introduced by my family into arts, music, philosophy and experiencing nature. I started to experiment with sounds, moving images, dance, photography and writing when I was an adolescent. Later I studied Comparative Literature and Intermedia studies, Philosophy and Social Psychology /- Anthropology at the Ruhr-University Bochum and Art, Experimental Design and Film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Since 2009 I am working as a freelance artist, lecturer and curator in the fields of Art, Film production, education and theatre performances. Since 2003 I am exhibiting internationally in galleries, museums, video- and filmfestivals such as Images festival Toronto, European Media Art festival, Anchorage Museum, Invideo, Milano; Japan Video dance festival, Tokyo; Museum Soares dos Reis, Porto; Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, File Festival, Sao Paulo and Durban International Film festival, South Africa.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I created my first narrative short film in the year 2000 and developed a more intermedia style of using moving images, sound and choreography. I started to make art because I felt the urge to do it. But Moving Images are only an aspect of different mediums that I use to manifest my ideas and perceptions. I use photography, sound, performances and installations, too.
3. What kinds of topics have your films?
I am interested in subjective and collective imagination. And how this imagination become manifest through phenomena like gestures, places, language, transformation and sounds.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
Primary I am interested in a certain relation between the visible and the invisible. Then I start to develop a concept and a form. Sometimes the producing phase is prestructured by a kind of screenplay or visual concept. Sometimes it`s more like an experiment.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
Most of the time I use standard equipment for shooting and editing.
6. These days digital technology is dominating also video as a medium. In which way the digital aspect is entering the creation of your videos, technologically and/or conceptually?
Digital technology makes it easier to work on big and complex projects. I can use digital technology to combine sound, images, movement and time in an easy way.
7. How do you finance your films?
I finance my work mostly through lecturer jobs, commissioned work and the support from the Filmlaboratorium Düsseldorf.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team?
if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I start to develop my concepts individually. But most of the time when I shoot a video art work I like to work with other people. Its nice to get a new perspective from other people.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
I am influenced by everyday life, the arts, music and sound, other cultures and traditions, nature and philosophy.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I hope I can keep on doing my projects. In the moment I develop a new short experimental video and work on a cooperation with an other artist and a musician.
