Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I started in Art with drawing, painting, literature and music. Film comes
later without a propose. It was the mix of my early background. I have no
academic study. I learned to shoot shooting. Now I am teacher in five
cinema schools in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Always-in camera and lighting
area.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I started filming when I discover that a lens and the light was like a paper
and a pencil to write poetry. That happened to me when I was 25 years old.
Almost 25 years ago.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
My films have subjects that are alone and looking for a transformation that
may be a change of consciousness or something that is revealed to the main
character. The space where this character moves is always another
character. Place is very important for me. Music too.
I have shooted six dance for screen films. They are called Ensayos (Essays)
and two Experimental films with the same actor. He is the main character
of the feature film that I’m co directing with the editor right now.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
I develop my films in a sensorial way, usually I have very few words or
dialogues. I can’t avoid the sensorial way of shooting, maybe because of
my early background.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I have used Super 8 film, DV and HD video format, including DSLR
cameras.
6. What are the chances of the digital video technologies for creating art using “moving images†generally, and for you personally?
Digital video technologies have democratized the art of shooting. And I’m
agree with that.
7. How do you finance your films?
I finance my films with my own money. They are very low budget. I
usually ask for some equipment that I can “pay†later with my work as
Cinematographer. My crew includes friends and ex pupils too.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a
team?
I usually work individually as a video artist, but now I’m working with the
editor of my last short film as co director. We are editing now some scenes
of our opera prima. We will finish the shooting in April in Buenos Aires.
The scenes that we are editing now were shooted in Patagonia in January.
If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I like very much to work with a team. I think is like a Rock band where I
usually write the song but the crew helps me with the music.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
I think that I have many influences, but I like to work without defined
script.
Christopher Doyle says: “In occident films are constructed but in Orient films are discoveredâ€. I like to discover the film while I’m shooting.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
Now I want to finish my first feature film as co director and try to get some money to pay to the cast and crew.
