Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I studied Interactive Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University from 2001-2004. It was a interdisciplinary course, where I was left to explore my own ideas. I worked mostly with animation and illustration.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I have been making films since I was about 14, but I only started to pursue it seriously when I got to University.
3.What kind of subjects have your films?
Personal memories are the subject of most of my films. They are most often whimsical and contemplative.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
I have a very clear cut style that I have developed over the years. Since most of my films are about me, my very personal style suits them well.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I use Flash to animate, with a Wacom tablet.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?
I am not really sure.
7. How do you finance your films?
I finance my films myself and with funding from NESTA and Screen Yorkshire.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I work primarily by myself. I have worked in a team, which I enjoyed, because it meant the work was shared and there was a more diverse range of ideas. I prefer working by myself though, because it gives me more control.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
Hayoa Miyazaki and Richard Linklater have had a very lasting influence on me. Illustrators like Roman Dirge and Jhonen Vasquez. Pearl Jam.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I am working a film for Screen Yorkshire at present, so finishing that is my main plan. I would like to continue to make animated films and illustrating.
