Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background.
I was born in Palermo, Sicily, in an artist’s family, with a milieu of painters, sculptors, ceramists…
So, naturally I go to study at Artistic High School. Here, I discover my passion for (graphic) design, and from here on start my career of designer, with lean interest for art(s). This arrive too late, after many years of professional activity, and with the age. Obviously, my professional tech background, now mainly based on digital tools, condition my artistic way too, so I work often with video.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
Well, mybe I have already reply to this… However, I must clarify something about: my video artistic activity is mainly animation, or aniway a research about experimental use of still images to create videos… I need some more times, before starting filming – strictly sense. But I think I’m almost ready to shooting…
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
All artistic creations, born deeply inside us; from mind, from heart, or both. So, usually my creative works bob up from emotions, like love, or from outrage – up against the world’s bad cases. My artworks, therefore, may be inmost or political, regardless of visible subject. The really subjects, are always this that burst my soul.
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
Basically, I haven’t one style (I suppose…), that characterize my works. Obviously, the visual aspect is relevant; I like put attention in color choise, to go along the feel of work… But, aside from I tell above, about technical features, many hinge upon by more relevant emotion(s) that are behind the work: passion, fury, delusion, pique, tenderness…
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
Since now I’m not (still) shooting, I work just with my PC. I use softwares like Adobe Photoshop and Flash, mainly.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?
Well, it’s easy, the audience. Like teaching YouTube, the peoples want see other than just TV. The phenomenon is still young, but I’m sure that in few years (maybe few months…) this claim will grow, and will become more specific – so artistic’s videos and films will reach too many peoples more than ever. I hope to be capable to ride this wave, like artist and like art manager.
7. How do you finance your films?
Finance? What wonderful word… Seriously, by now my video works don’t need any economic support, but I think that, if the things remain like now – at least in Italy – the chances to obtain some finance for video art are near to zero…
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
Well, mainly I work individually, but some times I work in team, with some other artists/friends. Truly, I haven’t preference, because both present bright sides. Workin’ by myself, leave me the widest creative freedom, while working in team should be more challenging. Many depend by team…
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
Well, the list can be very, very long… About what, I can list web and graphic design, photography, video (commercial, artistic and more…), television, movie… But about who, I haven’t any special preference or – better – refer.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I want start to shootin’, and – therefore – to produce more longer videos, exploring the expressive chances of time…
