Interview: 10 questions
1. Tell me something about your life and the educational background
I live in Seoul, South Korea and major in fine art at Seoul women’s university. I never have studied in abroad but I have travelled a lot of museums, galleries, and art fairs which in other countries. It helped me experience contemporary art and motivated me to express my thoughts and ideas.
2. When, how and why started you filming?
I am majoring in fine art, exactly painting, but my works are expressed in variety mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, performance and installation. I have also been looking for new ways to present my thoughts, so I took a video art experiments lecture that helped me learn how to deal with video equipment and edit film. It led me to make films.
3. What kind of subjects have your films?
I have had some questions about perception, sense, existence, seen and unseen, essence, awareness, time, space, and substance. ‘Touching’, my second film, is about perception. I considered when we recognise substance or existence, how restricted and fragmentary our sense are. I also want to ask ‘Is our percept reliable?’
4. How do you develop your films, do you follow certain principles, styles etc?
My works are more focused on concept than technical aspect. I try to condense my thought, and then think about how I could present that. The styles are depended on concept.
5. Tell me something about the technical equipment you use.
I don’t have my own camcorder so I usually borrow Sony digital camcorder from my school or use my DSLR camera, Nikon D90, which has lower quality of video record function. I also use Primer and After Effects.
6. What are the chances of new media for the genre film/video in general and you personally?
I believe the chances can make us to expand our ideas and expressions. New media technology will also enable us to overcome the limitations of expression.
7. How do you finance your films?
My films didn’t require much money so I mainly financed myself to date.
8. Do you work individually as a video artist/film maker or do you work in a team? if you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I have never worked in a team and I did all things on my own. If I have a chance, however, I want to make a collaboration work once.
9. Who or what has a lasting influence on your film/video making?
Experimental video artists, especially Bruce Nauman and Vito Acconci, have influence on me.
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a film/video maker?
I want to practice spans a broad range of media and continue to study films.
